Continuing my story from part 9 of my G20 Toronto experience at Queen and Spadina on June 27th, I was just released from the G20 detention centre (see tip#382). I was given a ride home by one of the many Toronto citizens volunteering their kindness to the detainees.
I arrived home just north of Queen and Spadina around midnight. This very long night had lasted 6 hours. Though still damp from being held in the rain earlier by the police the first thing I did was review the footage I took of the riot police. Throughout this whole ordeal this video felt extremely important and was relieved my camera and footage was intact. I posted the video on Youtube as soon as I could. See video
My gut was telling me that documenting this event was vital. My video and my personal experience were somehow necessary. I knew I was going to blog about my G20 experience and my intentions allowed me to connect with other like-minded detainees who soon posted their own stories online.
1) Michael Talbot, CityTV News Photographer
Michael and I connected via the G20 Facebook groups that immediately formed online. He pointed out that he is visible in my video. Through Facebook we shared links to each of our blog posts. See his photos and story: Click here
2) Dylan Leads, Photographer
I sat next to Dylan on the police bus and he is the one I blogged about that referred to the horror of the caged people in the detention centre as a scene from the movie Children of Men. See his photos and story: Click here
3) Sherry B. Good, Representative Plaintiff, Class Action Lawsuit
Sherry and I connected via a G20 Facebook group and she shared her compelling story via a word document and is now available online. She is now acting as the representative plaintiff for more than 800 people who claim they were wrongfully arrested during the G20 weekend in Toronto. Read her story: Click here
Avatar Special Edition 2010
James Cameron's movie Avatar was a technological breakthrough in visual storytelling. It told the tale of a paraplegic former Marine named Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) who is recruited to learn more about an alien race called the Na’vi on their home planet Pandora.
At the heart of movie's narrative is Sully documenting his entire, mind-blowing experience on video. In doing so Sully is recording events so others may somehow benefit and learn from. This storytelling device also allows the audience to follow in his first hand encounters as if we are part of the story.
As for the 9 extra minutes Cameron has added to this special edition only fans who have seen the original version several times may notice. The new footage is spread out throughout the film and some of it does add to the storyline as well as add more amazing visuals. Cameron is already planning another DVD release with a total of 16 extra minutes of footage! Here is a list of notable new footage: Click here
Be a Conscious Storyteller
This blog has become part of my heart and soul for over 3 years. It has become my passion to document my life and career challenges here in my hometown of Toronto. And if my video and blog articles on my G20 experience can somehow help or inspire others then it was worth the ordeal I endured that night in June.
In our lives and careers we are all storytellers. We are already documenting who we are and what we believe in through our words and actions. And if you are compelled to write, record, photograph or videotape any event, know that you are documenting history for the benefit of others.
Be a conscious storyteller in your life. Be more aware that your point of view has value. There are people out there who want to hear your story!

Tip#384: Tell Your Story – G20 Toronto Pt.10 – Avatar Special Edition

Tip#383: We All See Value In Different Things - The Book of Eli 2010
One person can love a movie while another may not care for it at all! Why are there vastly different opinions about movies? I believe it's because each of our life experiences shape the lenses for how we view the world. Our experiences define what VALUE we find in the stories and ideas in films.
I have a video on Youtube I produced about passion and, as of this writing, received over 45,800 hits (see here). This doesn't mean that thousands of people love my video. In fact if you read the comments they are mostly negative. And yet I've received dozens of direct messages from people who loved the video. It goes to show that people find value in things that others may not.
One movie I absolutely loved was The Book of Eli. It was visually stylish and I recognized powerful subtle messages I found very motivating. And yet the film has had mixed reviews much like Eat Pray Love which I also loved (see tip#381). We all have different tastes in movies. No one is right or wrong.
The Book of Eli 2010
The movie The Book of Eli
takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a nomad named Eli (Denzel Washington) is on a mission to deliver the last remaining bible to the west coast of the US. Along the way you discover how some of the things we take for granted every day have greater value in this future world.
Eli's life experiences have shaped how he views his world so water is now more valuable than gold. Ordinary blankets, lighters and even fast food wet-naps have higher value in his future. Other insights the film shares are: appreciating the things we own; power in giving a compliment; being grateful; helping others.
Valuable Lessons
This movie has great value for me because it is a mirror for my life right now. I connected with the film's insights because of the valuable lessons I've been learning. My current life purging, life change and life rebuilding has shown me what I truly value the most. I have had to let go of so many furnishings and personal belongings that I actually feel lighter on so many levels.
My intense G20 Toronto experience with riot police in June (see series starting with tip#269) also helped me to value and appreciate the air we breathe, a simple breeze, freedom and the kindness of strangers. I am now living more fully. It's a fantastic feeling!
We all see value in different things. Everyone is going to have a different view of a movie so allow yourself to be inspired by films that others may not like. Stand by what you value because you will eventually find others that share your thoughts and opinions. This is what it is to be true to your SELF. Find the awesome value in LIVING your authentic self!

Tip#382: Ignite Your Neighborly Spirit – G20 Toronto Pt.9 – Mr. Deeds Goes To Town
Looking back now at my ordeal with the G20 riot police at Queen and Spadina in Toronto I was most affected by something very positive. And that was the warm, neighborly spirit I experienced immediately after being released from the detention centre.
In part 8 I had just traveled through the surreal corridors of the G20 detention centre and witnessed the caged people there (see tip#379). At the exit I was released from my metal handcuffs, carried my belongings still in the plastic police bag and escorted out into the damp night air.
I looked up and saw a Subaru car dealer sign and remembered this detention centre was inside the converted Toronto Film Studio on Eastern Ave. I walked passed several police officers towards the road where people across the way applauded me and other detainees exiting the detention centre.
Immediately a man came up to me and said they had water, food and warm clothes across the street. He even said there were volunteers to drive me home. I was deeply touched by this generosity of spirit. I found my glasses in the plastic police bag and went over to get some food, water and a very, very warm blanket.
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town 1936
The Frank Capra classic Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
celebrates the idea of extending neighborly spirit to others. After inheriting millions of dollars, Goodfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper) decides to use his entire fortune to help give the unemployed financing to set up their own farms.
And because Deeds comes from a small town he is empathic to the small yet meaningful needs of others around him. He feeds others when he sees they are hungry or simply treats others with heartfelt kindness and respect.
Meet John Doe 1941
Another Frank Capra film Meet John Doe
celebrates the same neighborly spirit. A homeless man, John Doe (Gary Cooper) finds himself in an unusual position where he gives a radio speech that inspires a nation to help one another. The broadcast inspires people to form John Doe Clubs all over the country and do what they can to help those in need in their own neighborhoods.
The Warmth of Strangers
I feel blessed to have experienced the warmth of strangers who just wanted to help the detainees of the G20 Queen and Spadina experience. Caring Toronto citizens who were watching the TV news of our situation had come to our aid offering food, water, warm clothes and a safe ride home.
To those who were there that night I thank you from the fullness of my heart. Your kindness and generosity gave me the greatest gift out of an intense experience. You reaffirmed that during times of trauma and unexpected crisis that people can demonstrate the greatest meaning of what it is to be human. And that is to help one another.
Be inspired to do the same for others in need around you. To start you can become more aware of your own neighbors and extend a smile and warm eye contact when you pass them by. You'll be amazed at how open people are once you show them the open hand of friendship. It takes one person to initiate contact. Be that person today!

Tip#381: Find Empowering Resources for Your Life Transition – Eat Pray Love
Hot on the heels of seeing the astounding Scott Pilgrim vs. The World movie I went to see Eat Pray Love
with several friends. Despite the negative reviews I found this movie to be one of the most powerful I've seen this year. In fact at the end and throughout the entire credits I couldn’t stop crying.
I was deeply affected because there were so many parallels in the story with my own current life transitions. The foundations of my home and my direction in life and career have been shaken up just like the heroine named Liz. In her story she looses all her money, stores all her belongings in storage and lets go of the old life she was living. This was a very emotional mirror for me to watch.
And yet the film is filled with an overflowing series of insights and messages on how to overcome the pain of life changes. You will find many empowering tips for finding yourself again. There were lessons Liz learns that I already discovered from my challenges and there were many more that I can now apply to my current situation. This movie has already helped me be more confident in KNOWING I will unearth the direction my life and career are destined to go.
Eat Pray Love 2010
Based on the true story and best selling book Eat Pray Love
stars Julia Roberts as Liz Gilbert who travels around the world to rediscover who she is. She travels to Italy to experience the pleasures of eating then to India to learn the power of prayer and finally Bali where she discovers how to love again.
Through the vibrant characters she meets Liz begins to look at life in a whole new perspective. A medicine man in Bali gives her a drawing of a figure with four legs signifying that she stay very grounded and to look at life through her heart instead of her head. In Italy she meets a man who explains the true nature of pleasure that is not fully understood or practiced in North America.
Every day since I saw this film I remember another empowering message. I recommend to anyone going through a big life transition right now to see Eat Pray Love
and discover this as a powerful resource. If you've read the book I suggest putting aside expectations and let the cinematic version unfold for you to drink in.
Self-discovery can be an enjoyable experience if you wish it to be. Traveling around the world is one glorious way of doing this. Movies are another where you can learn life lessons from the movie heroes who overcome their adversities. Whatever resources you choose to help you in your times of change always remember to enjoy the journey!
P.S. I am sipping a delicious vanilla bean latte from Second Cup as I write this! See tip#380

Tip#380: Enjoy A Super Surreal Experience – Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
Surreal: Having the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream.
Going through unexpected life changes can sometimes feel surreal and disorienting. This is good because its one way of shaking up your old mindset to make room for new opportunities and exciting experiences.
As I've been documenting in this blog, I have experienced so many life changes this year that my days feel so surreal. It feels like I keep stepping into a different quantum reality as factors that seemed established in my life (career, home, etc.) are constantly tossed up into the air like puzzle pieces.
Even watching the opening day screening of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
felt like a wild, hallucinatory experience. The movie is set entirely in my hometown of Toronto because creator Bryan Lee O'Malley wrote and illustrated the comic series when he lived here. Seeing familiar locations like Honest Ed's and Sonic Boom in the movie was a thrill.
One passion I'm always writing and talking about is my love for Second Cup's vanilla bean lattes. What was shockingly surreal is that the main character Scott walks right into the ACTUAL Second Cup I go to regularly near Queen St. West and Spadina Ave.! I felt my mind bend and shift as if I was in a dream watching this scene. Now you will be able to see the very same location I get my blissful vanilla bean lattes in this movie. It's surreal and yet super cool!
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World 2010
The movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
is about a young man's battle with the seven ex's of a girl he has fallen for. Scott (Michael Sera) faces seven super powered ex's which, in itself, is part of the surreal quality of the story. It fuses so many film genres like kung fu, fantasy, slacker comedy and a love story that you just have to surrender to the journey that's unfolding and enjoy the ride.
And that's the message I've received from the universe time and again on facing and overcoming my own life challenges. Just surrender to the journey and enjoy the ride. It's about staying present and taking responsibility for all the actions you took that got you in the situation you're in now. Scott Pilgrim learns this himself by the end of the movie.
Your World Is Transforming
If life is feeling disoriented and surreal do your best to see it as a positive sign that your world is transforming for the better. Sometimes your head needs to be shaken up and twisted around in order for you to see straight again. Great ideas, solutions and epiphanies are born from adversity.
And if your positive emotional energy needs to be re-activated then come to a Second Cup in Toronto and have a blissful sip of a vanilla bean latte!
“The underlying reason for all this flash is Scott’s journey into self-awareness.”

Tip#379: Feel Empathy – G20 Toronto Pt.8 – The Green Mile
Empathy: Identification with and understanding of another's situation, feelings, and motives.
In part 7 of my G20 experience, other detainees and I had been suffocating and air slowly filled our bus compartment (see tip#379). After waiting about an hour in the police bus parked inside the detention centre we were escorted one by one by officers to sit on the concrete floor in rows. I still did not have my prescription glasses (police took them away) so everything was a blur.
The police allowed those who needed to go to the bathroom to be led to portable toilets with doors left open. Despite having to undo my fly with handcuffs on it was a heavenly feeling to relieve myself. I didn't care if officers were watching. It was a blissful moment.
Soon each of our assigned numbers were called out and we were released with our belongings still in plastic police bags. I hoped my camera was still safe with the footage I shot of the riot police (see here). But I was just happy I was now being escorted out of what I thought was the main detention centre. To my surprise I was taken down a maze of corridors that opened up to an unbelievable scene.
It was like something out of a horror movie. I found myself in a vast warehouse space with countless cells. Through my blurred vision I could make out many people in dog-like cages and galvanized sheets of metal. I was stunned. As the officer escorted me down the maze of corridors (still in handcuffs) I'd hear crying and calls for help from the prisoners.
There was one caged girl I passed close enough to see the despair, fear and pain on her face. She looked so alone and hopeless. I deeply felt for her and wished I could have comforted her in some way.
The Green Mile 1999
The Stephen King movie The Green Mile
is about a wrongfully accused prisoner named John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) and his experience in a 1930's penitentiary. The head prison guard, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) becomes empathetic to Coffey as he expresses a deep innocence and later demonstrates a profound gift for healing others.
Coffey heals Edgecomb of an ailment and also the Warden's terminally ill wife. He even resurrects a crushed mouse. Coffey had the ability to help others even though he was imprisoned himself. I wished I could have somehow helped that one girl I saw in the detention centre. I could empathize with the pain she must have been going through.
Emotional Connections
Going through a traumatic experience can help you build powerful mindsets like resilience, perseverance and optimism. They can also activate your empathy for others going through similar experiences. Connecting emotionally with others is what leads to building a stronger sense of community among strangers.
Dire situations have a way of bonding people. Be empathic to others you feel an emotional connection to. And, if you can, reach out with a helping hand.

Tip#378: Have the Best Friends in the World - Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage
I recently made a marketing decision to have Motivational Superhero as my job title. And it seems the universe is testing me to see if I am worthy of it! Just read this blog over the past few months and you'll see what I mean! e.g. G20 Experience
In shocking realization, the place I moved into 3 months ago did not work out (see tip#352). The result was I could feel the universe pushing my superhero buttons to do an even more massive purge of personal belongings I wrote about in tip#372. And though it has been intense letting go of furniture and other items of sentimental value I've maintained my indestructible optimism.
Once again close friends have been tremendously supportive. Even Facebook friends whom I rarely communicate with have been helpful in making recommendations for new Toronto neighborhoods and reliable movers. This is proof that when the rug has been pulled from under you that you will KNOW who your friends truly are.
Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage 2010
The documentary Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage is a revealing look at the close friendships of three members of the Canadian rock band Rush. All from Toronto, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson had been childhood friends while drummer Neil Peart joined the group while in his teens. They've been creating influential rock for 4 decades with hits like Closer to the Heart and The Spirit of Radio.
The documentary reveals that Peart suffered the devastating loss of his daughter and first wife in the late 90's. Peart chose to travel cross-country on his motorcycle in order to heal. His other band mates Lee and Lifeson cared so much about Peart that they felt that Rush as a band was over if Peart wasn't a part of it.
Supportive Friends
In my teens I learned to appreciate Rush. And their music formed the soundtrack of my high school memories. Now in my adult years I've learned to see them as amazingly talented individuals who were also great, supportive friends for each other.
Whatever challenges you are going through always remember that you are never alone. Remember that old and new friendships can form because of the issues you face. Be courageous and honest about your predicaments. You'll be surprised with who comes to your aid. This is how you'll discover who your best friends are in the world!

Tip#377: Appreciate the Little Things Like Air – G20 Toronto Pt.7 – Red Planet
When something you take for granted every day is taken away from you it can shift your awareness profoundly as to how much you truly need it. This happened many times during my G20 riot police experience back on June 27, 2010 here in Toronto. See part 1: tip#369
In continuing my story from part 6, I was in the police bus already parked inside the detention centre for about an hour. There was no air circulating and the body heat of about 24 other detainees had started to raise the temperature and fog up the windows in my compartment. We were still in handcuffs and soaking wet from the cold rain earlier.
The man across the aisle started to express how he couldn't breathe and I could see the pain on his face. Soon I was having trouble breathing as well. Guys started to bang on the windows for any one outside to give us air. Over time I began to suffocate and initiated my own cries for help. We all cried out for air about 1/2 dozen times hoping the police within the detention centre would help us.
I was slowly passing out as finally an officer opened a small area from the back of our compartment that let some air in. It was so minute and yet I could feel that life affirming oxygen slowly enter my lungs. Air never felt sweeter.
Red Planet 2000
The science fiction movie Red Planet
features many life threatening challenges to a group of stranded astronauts on the planet Mars. There is a scene where astronaut Gallagher (Val Kilmer) is the first of 2 other men whose oxygen tank nears empty. He slowly suffocates and you see the tense horror on the others as they watch him suffer.
One by one they each run out of air when Gallagher is the first to collapse to the ground gasping. This is what I felt in the enclosed police bus as the oxygen depleted. Thankfully, as in the movie, we eventually received air.
Fully Conscious
Since that police bus experience I have become fully conscious of any breeze I feel on my face. I deeply appreciate the feel of a fan blowing air in my direction. I am grateful for the oxygen I feel filling my lungs. This is the silver lining of the challenge I experienced.
When something essential is suddenly taken away from you, you receive the gift of awareness of appreciation. See these challenges as a way of helping you acknowledge the little things in life that are passing you by. Breathe in every moment because there is ALWAYS something to be grateful for.

Tip#376: Passion, Purpose & People – Tucker: The Man and His Dream
I have many passions that include movies, writing this blog and delicious foods. I also love taking photos and videos that document moments that can be shared with the world. I believe that identifying and living your passions can lead to recognizing your higher purpose in your life and career.
Tony Hsieh In Toronto
Recently I went to see Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com give a presentation here in Toronto hosted by Ramsay Breakfast. Much like what Hsieh says in his book, Delivering Happiness, he shared key ingredients for a successful business which include instilling passion and a higher purpose within every single area of your work culture. For more see tip#374
The event itself had everything I loved including a beautiful venue, inspiring people and great food. Loved the scrambled eggs and bacon! I also had the pleasure of meeting Bob Ramsay the host of Ramsay Breakfast located in the stunning venue of The Grand Banking Hall inside One King West. I loved taking photos of this event and then share online on Facebook. See photos: Click here
I later emailed a thank you to Mr. Ramsay and mentioned that I loved the scrambled eggs. He responded that he loved the eggs too! This is a prime example about how expressing something you love can connect you with others. I believe this is the highest purpose of passion.
Tucker: The Man and His Dream 1988
The movie Tucker: The Man and His Dream
is based on the true story of automobile entrepreneur Preston Tucker (Jeff Bridges) who had a passion for inventing. The film focuses on his resilient, optimistic spirit for creating a safer car adding the innovative idea of seat belts.
Despite many adversities such as bad press and interference by the Big Three auto companies the movie shows how Tucker's passion and purpose for creating "the car of tomorrow" garnered unwavering support from his family, mechanic team and other key individuals. In the end, even after he loses his company, Tucker is shown still enthusiastic about inventing something new and exciting.
Share Your Passion
Identifying your passion and sharing it with others can lead you onto an exciting journey. Knowing and expressing your passion can connect you with like-minded people. Living your passion can ultimately reveal the higher purpose for what your mission in life is all about.
Your journey may be a bumpy road but at least your passion and purpose will magnetize supportive relationships. Do your best to stay passionate, enthusiastic and optimistic no matter what comes your way!

Tip#375: Facing Frightening Images – G20 Toronto Pt.6 – Children of Men
There is so much to share about my G20 riot police experience that I am compelled to continue this series of articles so people can learn what really happened on Sunday night June 27th in Toronto.
As I wrote in tip#373 I was bonding with 2 other detainees in the police bus parked outside the detention centre. After about an hour and still soaking wet and in handcuffs we finally drove inside. My fellow detainees began to gasp at what they were seeing through the left side windows. Since the police had taken away my prescription glasses I had to ask the photographer next to me what everyone was seeing.
He asked if I'd seen the movie Children of Men and I said yes. He said that's what he was seeing. There were people in cages like dogs in a dog pound just like in the movie. I could hear them yelling, some crying to be released and some were pleading for water. I wonder if it was a blessing not to clearly see these people suffering in what sounded like a horrific sight.
Children of Men 2006
The movie Children of Men
is a dark vision of the year 2027 where women have become infertile. There are no children any where in the world. Illegal immigrants are shown detained in cages throughout the film. It is a disturbing vision of the future and yet there is hope when a man named Theo Faron (Clive Owen) is asked to help the first pregnant woman in decades.
There is a scene where soldiers and insurgents suddenly stop fighting when they hear the baby crying. For a moment there is a profound peace as Theo escorts the mother and child through both factions in deep awe of this tiny, precious baby.
Hope
I hope this scene mirrors positive results for the ongoing G20 protests of the police actions towards civilians that weekend in Toronto. I hope there is a profound peace that manifests especially for 100's of other non-protesters like myself that experienced unnecessary pain and suffering at the Queen and Spadina standoff. For now I am discovering the value of the darkness I witnessed through writing these blog articles and sharing my story.
We all witness frightening images at one time or another. They can affect us deeply and shake us up. And then there are times we see beautiful images that lift our spirits. There is value in both and it's up to us to find that value for ourselves.

Tip#374: Create Your Own Universe – Tony Hsieh's Delivering Happiness - Inception
Life can sometimes appear unbearable and impossible to deal with. And yet this can all change once you believe you have the innate ability to make big changes for the better.
As mentioned in tip#372 I've experienced multiple challenges this year both in my life and career. What is helping me stay positive and resilient is the mindset of envisioning the world I want instead of the one currently in front of me. I am BELIEVING in a better world for myself.
Delivering Happiness
One book that's been inspiring me to confidently move forward is Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh. He is the CEO of Zappos, North America’s number one online shoe store. We had actually met back in December 2008 after seeing Tony on The Oprah Show and touring his head office in Las Vegas. See my blog articles on Zappos: tip#205, tip#213, tip#214, tip#238, tip#261
Tony's book outlines his success stories with founding Zappos and how he built and sold a company for $265 million dollars just out of college. He also shares ingenious entrepreneurial stories while in college and as a youth. Tony continually shares that is it PASSION and building supportive RELATIONSHIPS that are primary keys to success and happiness. Above all the key to envision, create and believe in your own universe must be part of your mindset.
Inception 2010
The movie Inception is an incredible and astonishing movie that deeply explores what it is to envision and create your own world. The story is about a man named Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) who has the ability to enter the dream of others and implant or discover important thoughts within the subconscious. It is a powerful film that will motivate you to think of new possibilities in your own life.
There is a stunning scene where Ariadne (Ellen Page) has joined Cobb within his subconscious world in Paris. There she begins to envision her own world and literally alters the city and landscapes all around them. Despite Cobb telling her not to do this she pushes forward to create the world she wants to have.
Alter Your Mindset
Ariadne's willful attitude and the proactive attitude I'm learning about Tony Hsieh reminds me of the mindset I’ve already been training myself to embody for several years now. And that mindset begins with envisioning, creating and believing in the life and career I want. It doesn't matter if what I want isn't here yet what matters is that I am enjoying the journey there with my passion for writing this Movies That Motivate blog and celebrating my supportive and loving relationships everyday.
Your world right now may not be as fulfilling or satisfying as you may desire. Just remember that you have the ability to alter your current situations by ENVISIONING the future you want. BELIEVE in this new reality and then take the steps to CREATE it one small piece at a time. Do this and you too will have an incredible and astonishing life!

Tip#373: Finding Support In Difficult Times – G20 Toronto Pt.5 – The Shawshank Redemption
On Sunday, July 11, 2010 I was watching the news that Spain had won the world cup and fans were celebrating on top of a Toronto streetcar. It was a joyful sight and yet I wondered if the police would try and stop this public event blocking the streets like they did at the G20 standoff at Queen St. and Spadina Ave.
I thought back 2 weekends ago when I was boxed-in by riot police at the intersection of Queen and Spadina on route to my way home (see tip#369). I thought about how I was detained in the freezing rain stripped of my belongings. I was then transferred to a police bus where my plastic zip-tie handcuffs were replaced with metal handcuffs. Soaking wet, I was still grateful to be somewhere dry.
Without my prescription glasses (removed by the police) everything in the bus was a blur. I was directed to the back compartment of the bus that sat about 20 to 24 bodies. I sat next to a budding journalist and photographer who was also documenting the Queen Spadina event like me. On the other side of the aisle was a man who remained quiet.
We were on the police bus for over 2 hours and wondered why we were just sitting outside the detention centre. At one point the man across the aisle was in serious pain from his handcuffs being too tight. He was also suffering from anxiety. I looked him straight in the eyes and told him to hang on. He looked back at me and I could tell he really appreciated my supportive words. We didn't even know each other's name.
The Shawshank Redemption 1994
The movie The Shawshank Redemption
is about the perseverance and resilience of an innocent man named Andy (Tim Robbins) held in prison for many years. His survival was the result, in part, by the supportive relationships he forged. One of those friendships was with Red (Morgan Freeman) the man everyone could go to when they needed something.
Andy and Red were fully aware of their situation and only over time realized the deep value of having each others support and friendship to overcome the harshness of prison. Fate had brought them together and they gave each other the will to hang on and keep living.
Someone Somewhere
Overcoming difficult situations in life is accomplished with a positive, resilient mindset. The other key factor is having supportive relationships. Whenever you find yourself caught in a challenge that seems overwhelming remember that there will always be someone somewhere that could help.
When you feel trapped in life remember to take a breath and look around you. There will always be someone, perhaps sitting right next to you, that could offer a helping hand. And who knows? Maybe you could be that helpful person for someone else in need.

Tip#372: The Positives of Being Stripped of Belongings – G20 Toronto Pt.4 – Peaceful Warrior
For those of you following my adventures on this blog know that this year I have been vastly stripped down to the core of my business, finances and lifestyle. Due, in part, to the recession hitting in the fall of 2008, my business has been in a state of re-evaluation and I've had to declutter and let go of many belongings in order to move to a much smaller home back in May (see tip#352).
My experience with the G20 standoff at Queen and Spadina in Toronto took me even further. Like 100's of non-protesters detained by police that evening I was stripped of my backpack, camera, wallet, prescription glasses and even my shoelaces. I thought to myself that there must be some higher purpose for this ongoing and radical emptying I keep experiencing.
Peaceful Warrior 2006
The movie Peaceful Warrior
is filled with many profound insights on emptying your mind of clutter in order to move forward in life. A college gymnast named Dan (Scott Mechlowicz) seeks wisdom to be an Olympic champion through an enigmatic gas station attendant he calls Socrates (Nick Nolte). To his surprise, Dan doesn't expect his training to include the need to let go of so much in his life in order to make his dreams come true.
There is one scene where Dan and Socrates face muggers demanding their wallets. Though they both hand them over, Socrates continues to offer everything they've got until they're both stripped to their underwear. Dan is confused and angry for having to follow this painful learning path but later understands that it is a metaphor for what he has to strip away in order to make room for a more empowering mindset.
This movie, in turn, was a mirror for what's been happening to me these past few months. I've been drastically letting go of internal and external baggage in order to achieve my bigger goals. There is no coincidence to all that I'm going through. I have to just trust that everything, including my G20 experience, is for a higher purpose. In the end ALL my belongings were returned safely to me within a few hours of detainment.
Making Room
If you feel you are being stripped of belongings, finances or other possessions, look for a higher purpose that's in play. Focus on the possibility that something positive is percolating. Trust that you are making room for something you've been TRULY WANTING to enter into your life.

Tip#371: Persevere No Matter What – G20 Toronto Pt.3 - Titanic
Persevere: To maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement; to continue steadfastly
Through the power of social media I've been connecting with other non-protesters who were detained by G20 riot police at Queen and Spadina Toronto on June 27th via Facebook groups. Several of them were of the 100's detained in the freezing rain for 3 to 4 hours. I was stunned to see the CP24 TV news coverage to witness their suffering and how difficult it must have been to persevere in the heavy rains.
See CP24 footage part 1 (go to time 3:30): Click here
See CP24 footage part 2: Click here
I was part of the first wave of detainees so I was in the freezing rain for about an hour before being placed in the shelter of a police bus. However it was still an extreme challenge to be standing in the cold rain handcuffed behind my back and no shelter. I was shivering uncontrollably in my short sleeve shirt and shorts.
Thankfully the officer holding onto me obliged my request to put a plastic bag, that was on the ground, over my head. The bag helped but I still had to persevere through this freezing rain so I focused inwardly and remembered to breathe and stay calm. I kept telling myself that everything would be okay and that I would get through this challenge.
Titanic 1997
A movie that celebrates perseverance is Titanic
starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack and Kate Winslet as Rose. Together they do everything they can to move forward despite every challenge they faced after the Titanic is struck by an iceberg and slowly sinks.
They each tap into inner strengths they may not have known they had. They learn to push themselves beyond their comfort zones. And as they are finally floating in the freezing waters after the Titanic sinks Jack makes Rose promise him to not give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. And she does. She pushes on, survives and lives and long, fulfilling life.
Your Amazing Potential
Some situations you face in life can feel hopeless. They can feel like an endless cold rain. Do your best to maintain a positive mindset and tell yourself that you can get through your challenge. Believe you have strength within you that will help you overcome any obstacle you face.
Challenges are there to bring out the best in yourself. Let the pain, fear and negative feelings you feel be the signal you are about to discover your amazing potential!

Tip#370: Trust Your Collision Courses In Life – G20 Toronto Pt.2 – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
"Sometimes we're on a collision course, and we just don't know it. Whether it's by accident or by design, there's not a thing we can do about it."
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
After posting my video on YouTube of the G20 riot police boxing me in and other non-protesters at Queen Spadina, it received many positive and negative comments. Some said that it was our fault for being there or not heeding the police warnings. In reality there was no way out once you were in the area.
What the world needs to know is that even if our group left that area there was a SECOND regiment of riot police slowly surrounding the onlookers and innocent bystanders. It was a double set of what is known as "kettling", a police tactic to contain protesters and prevent them from leaving the area for several hours.
You can see the 2 sets of kettling at Queen Spadina area in this aerial video: Click here
So whatever circumstances and choices I made prior led me to all I experienced on Sunday evening. It was the same for 100's of others who reportedly were just walking their dog, coming home from dinner at a restaurant or going to a friend's place to watch a soccer game. They were all detained in the cold rain for over 3 hours. We were all on a collision course with something that would shake up our lives.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2008
There is a fantastic sequence in the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
about collision courses. In this scene Benjamin (Brad Pitt) is narrating a chain of events unfolding in a day in Paris France. A girl's shoelace breaks, a delivery truck blocks a taxi, a man forgets to set his alarm clock are all factors that led to the character Daisy (Cate Blanchett) being hit by a taxi that crushed her leg. She was a dancer.
Being at Queen and Spadina was my collision course with fate. Days later I was second guessing all my decisions that led me to my confrontation and detainment with riot police. I finally accepted that I was meant to be where I was supposed to be. I am trusting that the silver lining or bigger picture of why will reveal itself in time.
If you've experienced a traumatic situation and have been second guessing your decisions that led you there do your best to be kind to yourself. Trust that you were on this path for a higher reason. Switch on your optimistic mindset and look for the silver lining. Believe that there is PURPOSE in why that specific day unfolded for you.
Believe that all your collision courses you experience have a gift hidden within. There can be a powerful purpose revealed in all challenges only if you choose to focus on the possibilities.

Tip#369: Stay Cool, Calm and Confident – G20 Toronto Pt.1 - The Matrix Reloaded
Being in the right place and the right time can feel fantastic (see tip#368). Though if you find yourself in wrong place and wrong time it can be a test of how well you remain positive and cool headed.
The G20 Summit in Toronto triggered many acts of violence as well as many peaceful protests. On Sunday (after posting previous blog tip#368) I did errands and was on my way home right at Queen and Spadina when I spotted a crowd at the intersection. It felt like a regular street festival. Then I saw riot police coming in and started documenting what was happening in my own neighborhood with my video camera. I didn't realize the riot police were boxing me in.

Though it was intense I didn't feel much fear. I tried to see how I could get out but every angle was blocked. I remembered to breathe and did my best to stay calm. I surrendered to the moment and kept alert. Then one by one we were pulled out to be detained. I experienced no violence.
The Matrix Reloaded 2003
The character Neo (Keanu Reeves) develops a cool headed confidence during The Matrix movie trilogy. In The Matrix Reloaded
he displays this during a negotiation meeting within the enemy's own turf. Though surrounded Neo and his partners Morpheus and Trinity all stay cool, calm and confident. They knew when to take action and when not to.
At one point while surrounded by the riot police I looked up into the blue sky and wished I was Neo and fly right out of there. But this was real-life and I just kept calm. Others tried to break out and were met with violent restraint.
We all have to make a choice when faced with being in wrong place at the wrong time. If you find yourself in that situation do your best to stay cool, calm and confident. Find that part within you that is fearless. And always remember to breathe.
